And how adorable was it, watching Jared share his vast Twitter experience with his best friend, shepherding him through the process with a comforting hand on his shoulder and bursting into affectionate laughter when Jensen was as mystified as any of us were our first time trying to tweet. (“No Jensen, that’s an @, you need a hashtag…”) Luckily most of us didn’t have thousands of people watching and filming us when we started out tweeting.
We got to watch the boys make history – and to be in Jensen’s first tweeted photo too! Taken by Jared – of course. // As always at VanCon, we were treated to behind the scenes details from some of the crew too. We caught up with SPN director of photography Serge Ladouceur, who also wrote a chapter for Fan Phenomena Supernatural about how he gives the Show its distinctive look, Jason Fischer from the production office, and VFX wizard Adam Williams (though we somehow missed Ryan Curtis this year). Writer Adam Glass, locations manager Russ Hamilton, director/AD Kevin Parks and producer Jim Michaels did a panel, and stuck around after to sign autographs and greet fans. Jill Parks and SPN canine mascot Kuma also joined in. // So it wasn’t surprising when Jared’s son Thomas was so excited to see his “Uncle Jensen” onstage — but it was sufficiently adorable that the entire audience pretty much melted.
Despite what Jared and Jensen say, Thomas actually calls him “Hunka Jensen” which I have no other comment than “right there with you, baby.”
Jared also got him and took him around at the end to sign banners. (For the most part, people were decent about not shrieking at Jared and scaring Thomas. Yay.) Thomas wanted to see the silver sharpies, and seemed to think Jared was going to get in trouble writing on the wall.
IMO that was a genuine interaction of Jared showing “this is what I do” and he kept moving so they were turned away from the audience and didn’t do that “wanna say bye?” Thing.
3. Jensen was in a singing mood, which I haven’t seen mentioned. He sang with Rob both coming on stage and the outro.
4. The twitter decision seems to stem from the Facebook one. If he could get his own name “owned” then he was okay to it. He told someone ahead of me in autograph that he wanted to have a direct access line to fans and needed to be able to relate to his daughter as it seems that social media is just a reality for school kids.
4a. Jensen did say that DemonDean was one of the only times he has genuinely not played Dean in the series (he has said in other q&a he just always plays Dean in whatever fucked up scenario it is.) but even this is not possession and is at its core Dean – just completely twisted.

Jared spent literally the second half of the M&G giving the full explanation behind his American Airlines rant. Briefly, the highlights include:
The whole thing actually triggered feelings from when he was younger (“before I got to be tall”) when he was bullied. He couldn’t stand just being at the whim of the airline, feeling helpless.
He didn’t want to vent in front of his family, but he knew that we his fans would understand.
Long story short, if everything had gone smoothly, the flight he was on would have taken him + the whole family to the next airport with a several hour layover to then catch the flight to Vancouver. Instead they were stuck out on a tarmac for hours (they’d turn the air conditioning on and off, trying to conserve fuel, meanwhile it was over 100 degrees outside, and would reach that temperature in the plane as well). They blamed weather in the destination city for the reason why the flight wouldn’t leave, but meanwhile another later flight (which he could have caught, if they would have let him off the plane) took off and landed in that same city with no problems. After hours and hours of him arguing with him, they finally let him off the plane onto the tarmac (something they had previously claimed was impossible) and he went back into the airport and took a different flight – which he paid for himself.
Jared said that while he was able to eat the cost of the one flight and buy himself another without compensation, there were lots of other people on that plane (teachers, social workers, retirees) who didn’t have that luxury, and that’s why he was so frustrated and also why he spoke out.
Also, he can theoretically be sued by the network for over $10,000 per hour he holds up production. The airline wanted to reschedule him on a flight for the following morning. He would have had almost a full day travelling. They had a 6AM call time for the next morning. Do the math.
Other highlights include Jared talking about his approach to playing Gadreel, which he said he prepared for by imagining he was auditioning for a totally new role on a different tv show that had nothing to do with Supernatural. He did this to create an entirely new character that had nothing to do with Sam. He talked about the scene in “Dog Dean Afternoon” where he flashes so quickly between Sam and Gadreel and back to Sam again, and mentioned that he would not have been able to do that early on in his career. Now he’s at a point where he knows how to give the camera what it needs to make changes like that evident in such a short period of time. He compared working on Supernatural all these years to film school. He also praised Tahmoh’s portrayal of Gadreel, particularly in the final episode, saying that sort of scene is very hard to play, with the conflicting emotions. He contrasted it with how easy he finds scenes with Sam and Dean chatting in the car, or in a hotel room saying things like “you’ll always be my brother”, because those draw from real emotions that he can relate to.
I asked him about the rumors we’ve heard that Sam goes a bit dark, and that we’ll be seeing “Mystery Spot Sam” (which I told him is my favorite episode), and asked him whether or not we’d finally see Sam have the chance to save Dean. He said that we do see “shades of Mystery Spot” in Sam, with him being very focused and thinking a lot about how to find Dean. He reminded us that Sam “didn’t see the season finale” and as far as he knew, Dean was dead, and then he was gone. He said that Sam doesn’t have someone like Amelia to go to, so his sole focus is on finding his brother.
He also chatted a bit about the winery. Part of his answer here is something he specifically said shouldn’t leave the room, but him and Jensen are still very excited and definitely working on their plans. They have been dealing with some unexpected legal issues – he said he was “now able to talk about it”
Jared told us his family was going back to Austin this week or next week.
They’re going to start Thomas in preschool. (Trial basis. If it’s too hard being away from “daddy” during the week they’ll pull him for a bit ‘cause “it’s only preschool”.)

Jensen was eager to answer questions, as always, and in a great mood. My question was about the difficulty of playing a character who he has portrayed for nine years and knows inside out – as a different character. And yet not a different character. Dean, but not Dean. A demon, but still one with Dean’s memories and perhaps some of his emotions. Jensen confirmed that it was a significant challenge. Dean doesn’t care about anything, not his brother, not saving the world — all humanistic emotions are gone. (Which is difficult when the character has so much emotional depth). And yet, Jensen said, there are traces of that Dean who does love his brother – so playing that was a challenge.
Demon!Dean sounds like he’s going to be quite the handful, for both Sam and Crowley. The Mark gives him more power than your average demon, so when Crowley tries to get him focused on the task at hand, he’s just like, nah. (Even watching Jensen talk about the ‘new’ character is so intriguing – gimme now!)
“And then,” Jensen added, “I was also directing!” He rolled his eyes and laughed at himself. “So I’m directing AND essentially playing a new character. I love a challenge…and then I question why!”
There were times he was glad he had prepared so much, so he could just hand his director’s book over to AD Kevin Parks and say ‘it’s all in there’ so he could concentrate on playing Dean.
The other challenge of directing, he said, was a more technical one. He had to film a sort of cat and mouse chase in the bunker, but the bunker needed to look a lot bigger than it was. (By the way, that’s really saying something, because that set is HUGE!) Jensen went to Jerry Wanek for help, and they found ways to decorate the hallways to make them look like many different ones. It sounds like that scene will be amazing – similar to Hitchcock’s “Strangers On A Train”, with the protagonist going one way and the antagonist the other, until they eventually — inevitably — meet. *shivers with antici—-pation*
I was a happy fangirl because so much of the meet and greet focused on my favorite character of all time, which is always what I want to hear more about. I’m endlessly fascinated by Dean Winchester, and that doesn’t show any signs of diminishing any time soon (to the shock of exactly no one). Someone else asked about Dean in the pilot, and what drew Jensen to the part. He said the character jumped off the page right away for him, but he also gave a lot of credit to Eric Kripke, who created such a nuanced and layered character. He also gave credit to Jared, because the chemistry that he and Jared instantly had together took the characters to another level. It let them “fill in the blanks” to flesh out the relationship between the brothers.
Jensen also talked about Dean’s death scene in the S9 finale, although just listening to him talk about it made many of us in the room literally cringe. The emotion, for many fans, is still too raw. Jensen said that, as an audience member watching the Show, he really liked it. He liked that it was quiet. I hadn’t thought about that, but I think his acting choices in that scene, and Jared’s acting choices, really made the scene so much more powerful than it would have been. They chose to make it quiet, and the quiet simplicity of it only made it that much more horrifying. That much more real. Jensen played Dean’s reaction to being stabbed as shock, because that’s what would probably happen in real life. People lose an arm or a leg, they don’t yell and scream, they go into shock, not moving, not fighting. It’s not what we expect of Dean – we always expect him to come back swinging, grab for a knife, fight back. Or for Sam to get there just in time and swoop in and cut off the bad guy’s head. This time, none of that happened. The moment played out, almost in slow motion, almost silent except for the whoosh of Dean’s breath as his lungs are punctured, the grisly sucking sound of his flesh being pierced. Even now, I can’t think of it without shuddering.
This has been said before, but Jensen again said that he and Jared asked to cut the scene short and not say all the dialogue that was written. There was something like “we played it through”, but they felt it would have more impact if it was just “I’m proud of us.” I think they were right. Jeremy agreed. Jensen said it’s great to work with someone who doesn’t say, ‘just read what’s on the page, please’.
I’m always fascinated by how much the actors care about the Show and about their characters. After nine years, clearly their input is respected. In the scene where Dean pretended to warm up to Gadreel and shake his hand and then stabbed him instead, Jared asked if Sam would notice that Dean shook with his left hand, and Jensen replied that absolutely he would. That’s why there’s a quick shot of Sam’s perplexed reaction that was edited in.
One fan said she missed Dean being Dean, and Jensen allowed that he also misses “happy-go-lucky Dean”. It sounds like that Dean we know and love will be back eventually, a lighter Dean than in S9. Which is setting the bar pretty low, come to think of it. Dean was pretty dark in S9.
On a lighter note, a few last tidbits. Someone tried to get Jensen to tell us whether or not he sings in the 200th episode, which will be a “musical-ish” one.
“I’ll say this,” he answered. “Jensen doesn’t sing.” Someone gave him kudos for the little offhand comment at the Upfronts when he said the S9 finale would be “eye opening”.
“Did you know?” he asked, and then without waiting for an answer, “Of course you did. You’re all little geniuses.”
Jensen’s M&G is so hard to summarize, because it was essentially half an hour of Jensen going into detail on his process of playing Dean, Demon!Dean, directing, etc. It was amazing, and I will try to put together a summary, but it’s something that I’m literally going to have to try and outline just to make sure I keep everything straight. For now, though:
My favorite answer was to a fan who asked about Jensen’s experience directing this season (something I wanted to ask about it, but she asked it first and worded her question in a way that was better than how I would have). She asked what he would like us as fans to look for in this episode.
Jensen said that his “mountain” in this episode was that it takes place in the “catacombs of the Men of Letters”, which we’ve never seen. They have sets built for the major rooms we see a lot of, and a couple other sets which have been repurposed to appear to be a few different rooms, but this involved Sam and Dean going on a “cat and mouse chase” throughout the bowels of the building, and he had to make two hallway sets look like two dozen.
He explained how he planned this out for days/weeks ahead of time, He studied the old Hitchcock movies, using the technique where the “good guy” moves from left to right (the natural way that they eye wants to move) while the bad guy moves from right to left (which appears jarring on a subconscious level). After all this, he spread it all out on the kitchen table at home to map out everything that needs to be done. Then he started coming up with different ways to make the hallway look different. He asked Jared(actually Jerry, Jerry Wanek) for help, who suggested things like having different things mounted to the wall at the end of the hall to make it look different.
“Plus, on top of all of that, I had to play Demon Dean”.
He said that he made extremely detailed notes for everything that he needed to capture each day, so that even if he forgot something, someone else would remind him that there was still something else on his list. He said he was proud of the fact that during his week of filming, they had mostly days that were less than 12 hours of filming, and one or two “eight hour” days. He liked the fact that people were able to go home to their families at the end of the night.
To me, I was just blown away by all of this as a sign of just how brilliant a director Jensen is – not only was he able to conceive a vision of how he wanted the episode to appear, he was able to execute his vision in an efficient and timely manner. I really do hope we get a commentary from him on this episode on the eventual DVD (although now we might get a twitter commentary from him when it airs!) and maybe even a Director’s cut edition of the episode!

This discussion led into questions about what the heck actually happened, and he told us the story in some detail. The JIB greenroom was pretty crowded, with people and furniture, and Jared got it in his head he wanted to wrestle with Osric. Osric was on his back wrapped around him like a spidermonkey and Jared decided to do a controlled fall to dislodge him. He missed the coffee table, but hit the couch, unfortunately at a very bad angle. A few other people piled on top of him, and yeah. Bad things. When he got up it was obvious his shoulder was messed up, and Clif immediately came over and pushed it back into place. Jared didn’t want a Dr. after that, but it started tightening up, and when he tried moving it to loosen it, it came out of the socket again.
At that point, some of them went upstairs to Jared’s room and Tahmoh brought him about three oz of whiskey and told him to drink up. Then he and Clif started ‘yanking and wrenching’ (Jared’s words; I was cringing the whole time) at Jared’s shoulder.
Unfortunately, the injury didn’t heal properly—the broken bone fused together wrong and had to be rebroken in surgery.
We talked about a few other things, one of the fans gave him a gift from South Africa, and another asked him to thank his wife for buying some of her paintings. Jared said that she and Thomas would be stopping by the convention later, but that Shep hadn’t been feeling well.
I got to ask my soulmate question (In S5 we learned that Sam and Dean are soulmates. Since Sam needs to heal Dean’s soul, will that bond come into play in S10? Will it help Sam heal Dean?) and he said yes (!!). Jared is REALLY excited that Sam is going to go dark to save Dean—someone mentioned Mystery Spot and he was like YES! YES, LIKE THAT. He gave us some interesting spoilers, that I think are already mostly out there, but I’m leaving them out just in case. We were able to talk a bit more about some other things that Jared asked us not to share (sorry!) and overall it was a fantastic experience 🙂
