J2 NJCon Gold Panel (v)
J2 come out in sunglasses acting hungover. (Tired and silly all panel long lol.)
J2 blame Richard for directing them until 1am on Friday.
Jensen gives Jared a hard time for wearing a scarf lol.
They talk about how they are told what not to talk about (concerning the show) at Comic Con, and then the promo comes out and reveals those same things.
Late fan comes in – Jensen about Jared: You missed it he was shirtless. Jared: He was pantless!
Fans raised donations for Attitudes In Reverse, give boys a check for AIR.
J2 talk about the SPNFamily being “badass.”
Question about any details they can give about s11? Jensen won’t give up anything lol. Jared talks about Sam having some visions, will find out very quickly where they come from. They go back to the old mythology. Sam and Dean are friends again.
Jared hugs Jensen and wraps his leg around Jensen, then makes Jensen put his hand on Jared’s leg. Jared then blames the early morning.
J2 teases fan for thanking them for 10 years of Supernatural when she is 13. Says she started watching when she was 11.
What female character would they play? Jared said he already played Meg, says he loves playing angels so Hannah. Jensen says Rowena.
They turn the question on the fan, she would play Charlie. If she played a male, Sam. Jared jumps off stage to hug her. Jared then struggles to get back on stage. Jensen: Dude, you’re 7 feet tall get up here! Jared crashes into Jensen on way up. Jensen: This is what we’re like early in the morning…
Fan asks what item of power/ power Dean would want (since Sam didn’t keep Thor’s hammer). Jensen says x-ray vision. Jared plays the ba-ba-dum on the drums lol.
Fan gives Jared a hard time for Sam not keeping Thor’s hammer. Jensen says he doesn’t need Thor’s hammer, he’s a Winchester. More ba-ba-dum on the drums from Jared when Jensen says, “Not a Losechester.”
Question from a group of military spouses – asking if they would want to play a movie role about soldier with PTSD. Jared thanks spouses for their sacrifices. Jared says he would love to, but hard to schedule right now with SPN, but someday. Jensen talks about his and Jared’s soft spot for the military and said he wrote letters to be in Lone Survivor.
Fan asks when SPN is over, Jared knocks down mic over in protest. Jensen: See what you did? They then act out nursing home years of Sam and Dean.
Jared says when SPN ends he wants to “vanish.” Jared talks about all of the opportunities he has had over the years. He wants to be able to chase after his kids after SPN and take on small roles maybe here and there.
Jensen doesn’t know what he wants to do after SPN, doesn’t really have a plan.
Jared talks about crashing the TVD panel in Vegas. Jared thinks they should do like a YouTube crossover thing with the TVD guys.
We saw Book of Mormon last night in NYC, with an actor who was on spn, and recommend it if you, “don’t get offended easily.” They love sitting in the audience and watching the performances on stage at the theater. Jensen: “For us it’s like fuel.” A recent guest star was in the show and got them tickets.
Biggest crisis on set? Jared flew in late from LA and was really hungry. Week before buddy Tom Welling had been over to J’s house (during season 4) and they had a BBQ. Jared gets home, decided to eat leftovers. Jared was horrifically sick the next day, didn’t know the ribs were raw and not cooked. Went to his trailer, woke up to a doctor giving him a vitamin b shot in his butt – Jensen: Why in your butt? They could have done the arm…This was during Wishful Thinking restaurant scene; Jensen played beside a body double in some scenes because Jared was too sick.
Jensen talks about how Frank (who takes care of the Impala’s) had been in an accident on set when the accelerator had stuck to the floor. Jared went to Frank and when they see him Jared goes (boys having a hard time telling story while laughing): “Don’t worry his face already looked like that.” EMT’s were laughing.
Another story: Actor they were interrogating in a scene passed out while filming. He was out for 20-30 seconds. Jensen to the guy when he woke up: “Don’t look at Jared anymore. Happens all the time. Just stare at me.” The guy was fine, just low blood sugar and was nervous.
Fangasm Jensen MG
A fan kicked off the conversation by asking about Jensen’s propensity for playing sarcastic self-hating heroic characters, like Alec in Dark Angel and Dean Winchester, and whether he sought out those roles or they just cast him in them.
Jensen (wryly) I don’t know… Maybe it’s me!
We all laughed, and he told the story of how he got the role on Dark Angel. He guest starred as Ben in the episode Pollo Loco the first season of the show, and everyone was impressed with his performance. So when they wanted to bring in another male character, everyone was like “What about Jensen? We like Jensen.” Too bad that Ben had his neck snapped by Jessica Alba at the end of Pollo Loco.
Execs: I know! We’ll clone him!
Problem solved. And that’s how Jensen got the role of Alec. Jensen said that he gravitated toward the role of Dean Winchester from the start, including liking the comedic aspects of the role.
“I knew I could do it,” he said, “Because of playing Alec.”
I asked Jensen what his favorite scenes to film, either as an actor or a director, have been. I actually meant in Season 11 so far, but somehow those particular words didn’t make it out of my mouth.
Jensen: Wow, that’s a big question.
Jensen: I’ll answer for directing. My favorite scene to shoot and direct was Demon Dean chasing Sam through all the hallways of the Men of Letters bunker. The way it was set up, and how we made it look like there were many hallways when really there are only two.
Lynn: How about in Season 11? I mean, you don’t have to give spoilers obviously…
Jensen: (evil grin) Well, maybe SOME spoilers….
Lynn: (nodding eagerly) Okay, maybe some vague ones…
Jensen: One of my favorite scenes this season – and I think Jared would say the same thing – is in the ‘Baby’ episode.
Other fan: Is it a BM scene? A brother moment?
Jensen: (smiling) It is a BM scene, but not at the end of the episode to wrap up like it usually is. It’s just the two of us in the car, going to sleep. Me lying in the front seat and Jared in the back. And there’s no movement, it’s just two brothers talking about the past. It was like four pages of dialogue, just talking. I always wonder why they don’t do more of that.
Someone later shared that her favorite scene in the Show was when Dean reminisces about sneaking into CBGB’s as a teenager. I think we all love those glimpses of the Winchesters when they were young – so much of fanfiction tries to fill in those gaps in what we know about these characters we love so much. Jensen agreed that those scenes are important and special.
Jensen: The writers know that’s the heart of Supernatural.
Also apropos of the Men of Letters bunker hallway scene discussion, Jensen at one point was talking about the scene in that episode when Demon Dean is breaking through the door. One time he actually broke right through the door panel, so they had to shore it up with crossed panels. They wanted something “Shining-esque”, he said.
A fan asked if Jensen thought, in hindsight, that John Winchester was a good father. Jensen said that he certainly wasn’t a typical father, but he did equip his sons to survive in the dangerous world they found themselves in. It was sort of tough love, since John felt they couldn’t be soft, that they needed that hard outlook on things. Jensen said that if circumstances were different, however, that John would’ve been a really shitty father, that he failed in equipping his sons with love.
There were some serious moments. Someone asked how Jensen would want to be remembered in one word. He thought for a minute, then answered ‘selfless’.
He also talked about moving out to LA to consider acting, and how concerned he was because the business can eat people up and everyone is so fake. It was two years of acting before he finally made up his mind and said to himself, okay, I want to do that.
His love of directing hasn’t waned. He said that a script is “a puzzle you have to take apart and then put together,” in a way that made it sound like he really enjoyed that challenge. He wasn’t so enamored of essentially having a 9 to 5 job during the time he was prepping as a director though, so maybe he chose the right profession.
There were also some funny moments. A fan asked how they decide what items get destroyed when there’s a scene like the one in which Mark of Cain-afflicted Dean destroys a motel room, and then later Sam comes in and finds the destruction (and the key to the Impala).
Jensen said that they let him pick the props that he wanted to destroy, then set the room up. But they had to shoot Jared’s scene first, so they had Sam coming in and finding the destroyed room before he even got to destroy it! In that shot, the painting on the wall happened to be tilted.
Then they shot the scene where Jensen destroys the room, which he said they shot about three times. In one shot, he grabbed something and threw it behind him, and by a complete fluke it hit that same painting!
Jensen: I was like, YES!!!!
And the set dec guy was like: OMG!!!
Jensen laughed and said that destroying a room like that is probably too much fun.
There were some great Show questions this time, which I always love. Someone asked about Dean being protective of Sam, sometimes more like a parental figure than a brother.
Jensen: Eric Kripke wrote it to have Dean as the authoritative figure. He was older, he stuck to the “family business.” He was like John Jr. basically. So it was natural for him to step into that role. The older sibling often does if the parents are gone.
He said that Kripke wanted Dean to step into that paternal role with Sam, and that it is a huge defining characteristic of Dean. He mentioned that scene where they’re arguing about who will do the trial of killing the hellhound, and Dean tells Sam to stay back, that he’ll do it, that Sam is gonna live and keep going and have a family. Jensen said that Dean was saying, I will always sacrifice myself for you.
The fan who asked the question followed up, asking if Jensen liked that aspect of Dean.
Jensen: I do. It’s great characterization. I like it because it tees up a lot of emotion between the brothers, because there’s that protectiveness and love. Sam and Dean are so multi-layered. People ask, aren’t you tired of playing the same character for ten years? No, because Dean has so many layers, and you slowly peel them back.
A fan asked a great question about whether a Supernatural spin-off was a viable idea – is it possible to have a SPN spinoff without Dean and Sam?
Jensen said that if it were to work, you have to have investment in the characters to want to see their story.
Jensen: It’s not an ensemble cast. It’s not Buffy. Angel worked because that was an ensemble cast and Boreanaz had a big following.
He said that maybe it could work if it was to be about Cas going to heaven, or Crowley going “down south”. But he too allowed that people would miss Sam and Dean if they weren’t there.
There followed a bit of discussion about spinoff possibilities, including Wayward Daughters, and Jensen musing about one with Ellen and Jo. At one point, Jensen suggested that if one brother died, it could be the other brother…
Entire room: NO!
3:15 pm Jensen Ackles (Dean) and Jared Padalecki (Sam) (v) (v)
J2 NJCon Main Panel
J2 missed their cue and came out early, as Rob was about to present the fanvid award to someone named Emily. He turns to Jensen. "Great job, Emily."
I loved watching how focused Jensen was as he was directing the on-cue jump at the end of their intro song.
They congratulate Emily who won the fanvid award – video was of Sam and Dean.
Boys leave so they can come back out to the music and to redo their cue lol.
Crowd raises glow sticks and chants Always Keep Fighting. Jensen starts filming it.
Jensen talks about the brother video that was shown at the convention. His eyes were welling up because of emotional brother scenes; seeing them brings back the emotion.
Jared thinks we should all watch an episode of Supernatural together. He’d love to watch The French Mistake or an emotional one.
When they watch an ep, Jared describes watching Jensen watch Dean and his face shows whatever emotion Dean has on screen, he can see Jensen returning to that head-space.
Jared: Are you calling me baby? Jensen: Oh baby.
Jared hates when the writers put in scripts when Sam should cry. He knows when it should happen, and it does.
“Sam is my friend and has great hair.”
Jared teases Jensen by poking him. Jensen jokes: “10 years of this crap.”
They don’t have to think of sad things anymore to do emotional scenes like they did for Heart. It comes naturally.
Jensen: We’re so in tune with these characters we feel their emotions.
Jared wants Zachary Levi on the show. Someone suggests Donald Trump, Jared: We had Donald Trump. His name was Dick Roman.
Jared wants Danneel to be on the show. Jensen suggests Michael Rosenbaum.
Message from Richard: Only Supernatural could keep him from a Supernatural convention!
Jared: If my character from Gilmore Girls was on SPN he’d look at Jensen and go, “You’re kinda short for a Dean.”
Did he know the Winchesters started the apocalypse?! – Jared on Jensen’s character Alec from Dark Angel when Jensen said Alec would do well in the Supernatural world.
If Jessica didn’t die, what would Sam be doing? Jared: Trying to expunge Dean’s records for credit card fraud, etc, saving him from various felonies – spend his time getting Dean out of legal troubles."Saving him in a different way."
Jensen: If Sam had gone to Stanford Dean would be in jail.
Jared tried to hug Jensen. Jensen leans away. Jared gives up. Jensen leans in. Jared tries again. Jensen leans away lol.
Fan asks if “so get this” is Sam’s catchphrase. Jared offers up, “according to the lore…” as an option. Says “I lost my shoe” would be his catchphrase.
Would they consider LARPing? Jared spent his childhood going to renaissance festivals. He says leather pants are difficult to move in. Jensen recites odd costumes that he’s been put in (like the lederhosen.)
Danneel is a renaissance fair junkie who has in recent years forced Jensen to (slightly) dress up. Something about a horse tail. @jarpad : ?!
Jared says that the year Supernatural is over.. Jensen: 2042. Jensen rolls with the punches, will think about it when it happens.
Acting out the "Nursing Home years" of SPN, Jensen in his walker going "Sam, where's my keys?? Jared: He will dress up as Boba Fett for Comic Con.
Why do they torture Misha on set? J2 know not to prank each other. Jensen says it’s fun to pick on the new guy and Misha is still “the new guy.”
Jared: We always have that mischief in our body.
Jensen says there is no form of Sam he would want to play because Jared has taken care of that already. Though, he was jealous of Lucifer material Jared got. He says that Jared played the white suit Lucifer!Sam perfectly.
Jared drops his mic. Jensen: This is why we can’t have nice things.
What’s the last lie you told? Jared: Every day I tell myself I don’t have to write it down to remember it. Jensen: Told Jared he looked great backstage.
Jared chooses season 4 as his favorite. Jensen would probably agree. They also love season 8.
They want William Shatner on the show.
Sam and Dean being up against a wall is what people relate to. Despite supernatural scale of SPN, Jared feels that the struggles of story are universal.
Are we going to have an incubus or succubus on the show? Jensen: Maybe a VW bus? (Drum plays) Jensen: I still got it.
Jared’s favorite parts of the show are the relationships and the family that has been built.
Jensen jokes that a con was Misha.
J2 talked the other night after work about how they’ll never have anything like this again.
Jensen lists important relationships that Jared got from spn: Says Jared met his wife and his role model (Jensen points to himself.)
Jared: you can’t recreate this. We have family from the show. And all of you guys.
Asked about kid stories. Jared gets emotional talking about Tom and the t-rex on the slide.
Jensen tells story about implementing time out rule on JJ now. She enjoys it lol. “Do you need to go to time out?!” JJ: “Ok!” And walked over.
Someone took pics of the Padaboys without shoes on outside and Gen saw them online and got mad at Jared for not putting them on lol.
Jared took the kids for a walk without shoes. "The walk only lasted an hour, but the pictures posted online live forever!"
Football positions? “Sam would definitely be a tight end” – Jared. Jensen: Nope, I’m not gonna laugh at that.
Jensen said Sam and Cain should be quarterbacks and they can have a hair-off. Dean and Crowley would be running backs.
Jensen: Charlie and Rowena would be the coaches because “women really call the shots.”
Jared whispered something to Jensen that made Jensen bend over laughing for a while :))
The advancement of technology gives them a lot more freedom in making the show. Because of how tech has changed, they no longer use greenscreen or film. Cool to have a show run long enough for that much evolution.
Jensen says the fans inspire them. Jared says the idea of SPN is reaching out and helping others and he loves to see fandom doing the same.
favorite cheesy pick-up line? Jared: I lost my number, can I have yours? Jensen: Hi, I’m Jared Padalecki.
Last question: If Cas needed a new vessel would Sam or Dean allow him to use them. Jensen: NO. Jared: Sam has had bad experiences being possessed. Jensen says “my bad” (referring to Gadreel.) Finally say they could stick Cas in Baby if he was dying and needed a vessel “so they wouldn’t have to look at him.”
End of panel, Jensen sings and Jared plays the cowbell.
