Jared: Happy 2017!!… “I had one line and I messed it up.” They’re on Vancouver time lol.
Jared asks who saw Jensen last night at the concert. They just flew in last night, so Jared watched the game and went to bed early. Jensen says he “blacked out” last night and didn’t know what happened re: SNS.
Boys are excited about episode 10 airing on Wednesday. Jared whispers something to Jensen about the show. Jensen: That’s right! I forgot!
Jared: “Who has two thumbs, is French, and can’t play drums? Moi.”
Jared complimenting English teachers after being impressed with a fan’s grammar who has English majors in the family like he does.
Fan tells Jensen congrats on his PCA. Jared and the crowd applaud, Jensen: That thing makes some really good tea.
Jared tries to hide behind Jensen during a question. Jensen: I can’t hide you, you’re 9 feet tall.
Jensen gets distracted when a fan is trying to ask him a question and Jared is touching him: “I’m sorry, he was rubbing my face.”
Someone asks if Sam has his own set of keys to the impala. Jensen: Very rarely will you see Dean pull the keys out or put them in, a lot of times I just leave the keys in the car, the fact that car hasn't been stolen all the time, but Sam put LoJack on the car years ago. They then talk about how many people have all driven the Impala.
Boys are cracking up over Jared trying to speak French/Italian and it sounding the same: “Ahhh.”
Jared: So we went to Italy – this is a whole non sequitur, years ago Gen and I went off on our own to Tuscany, and some other places, so I don't speak Italian, so when they'd say bene? I'd go umm and gesture and I didn't know that meant go f**k yourself, and I'd even make a face like, and the waitiers would quickly back off.  Jared says I should have just done French and does a different hand gesture and shrug, and Jensen is doubled over laughing.
Jensen: It's like my wife, she is not good at doing accents I'll say Danneel, do …and she does "oooohhhh" .  Boys crack up even more.
A fan asks if they would ever do Inside the Actor’s Studio. Jensen talks about how they can win awards (PCA’s) and they don’t even get invited to those! Jared hugs/caresses Jensen.
Was PCA video planned? Jensen says that that publicist for WB sent him an email saying here’s this award send them a video to post on their website. Jensen says, “They didn’t invite me, screw them!” But then, “Oh, alright.” They were on set, Jensen and Clif went to Misha’s trailer to ask him to do the video and Jensen thinks it was Clif’s idea for Misha to give Jensen the award. Clif filmed it on his phone.
Fan tells Jared we’ll get him a PCA next year. Jared: Sweet!
Jensen talks about directing and editing, and they start talking about how they forget that the editor’s hear their conversations in between takes because they have to go through all of the footage that’s sent to them. J2 will be having a conversation, action is called, they do the scene, and once they call cut, they just continue the same conversation they were having and a lot is on film. They talk about the wives, kids, friends, etc. Jared: You’ll have an editor come up to you later like, “Hey, is Tom better from his cold?”
Jensen talks about how he had a hard reminder that the editor’s hear their conversations when he was talking about how, while directing, he had to sit in editing for so many hours and go over footage. Got an email from one of the editor’s: Funny, Jensen, I thought we had a good time. Warned him they were listening lol.
Would Jensen play James Bond? Jensen: I mean, I wouldn’t say no!
Jensen teases Jared for watching Mrs. Doubtfire this morning. Jared: What did you watch? Jensen: The news!
Jared thinks comedy on screen is nerve-wracking. He thinks he has a hard time with it on camera, so he prefers the darker or dramatic stuff, etc. Jensen would rather do comedy/action.
Boys are told about the Supernatural class at the university; boys are wowed and Jensen is speechless. “Can you major in that??” They can’t believe there is a course based solely on the show.
Experience or lesson they got in their acting career? Jared: God, there are dozens. Uh..Jensen? Jensen says there are lots of things that have shaped how they’ve worked. Jensen wonders about specific people that have put them on this path. Jensen brings up Days of Our Lives (Jared has to fan himself off) and talks about how Deidre Hall ultimately took him under her wing, and after three years told him not to renegotiate his contract to stay on the show. Deidre told him: “Get out of here, you’re better than this.”
Jared talks about how he was reading some stuff on David Bowie, and how when Bowie was asked what perfection was to him, he answered, “reading.” Jared has gathered as time as an actor that you can learn so much from reading and people; he’s learned from Sam, Dean, movies, books…He talks about keeping an open mind to learn a lot about life. Stop waiting to live and start living.

Jared asks for the houselights to come up so they can see the fans: “I see y’all, baby. Shaking that thang.”
It was Billy’s (from Louden Swain) birthday on Friday, so the boys brought out a cake and lead the audience in Happy Birthday. After the song Jensen says: I noticed that wax was dripping all over Jared’s fingers and he didn’t seem to mind.
Rob: Jared, you got a haircut? Jared: I didn’t think you’d notice.
Jensen: If there’s not a piece of cake for me back there when we’re done I’ll rip both your beards off.
Jensen asks for a bath towel for Jared because he’s sweating so much. Jared is given a towel but wraps it around his waist and proceeds to shake his booty.
Jared takes off his belt and Jensen is playing with it. Jared: It’s too big for you. Jensen straightens the belt out in his hands and Jared asks, “Will you be my Christian Grey?”
Jensen starts to auction off Jared’s belt and a woman eventually throws her entire purse on stage lol.
Jared explains that he stole Sam Winchester’s belt from set and it is going to be auctioned off for Billy’s favorite charity today.
Jared talks about how he was so happy to spend time with his family for the winter break, but is so happy to be with the fans today, too.
What would their version of heaven be now? Jensen: Dean’s version of heaven would be a long highway peppered with roadhouses. And Patrick Swayze. Jared: Sam’s would be that same highway with his brother driving, doing research on his way to a hunt.
Fan asks them to give some advice/ words she can use for an Always Keep Fighting segment she would like to do. Jared talks about hard times but that there is a lot of good and to keep fighting until you find what that good is.
Jensen: Why are you sitting so close to me? Jared whispers: Taste the rainbow. Jensen: Should we tell them? Jared: No. Mentions that sweet nothings stay between them.
Significant other for Dean: Jo or Lisa? Jensen gets reminded about a story from last night, explains that he was with Clif driving home and they pulled up next to a girl (a fan who is in the audience) who was singing and listening to Tiny Dancer. Clif goes: We should sing. Jensen and Clif start singing the chorus and when the girl notices who it is she’s like “Whoa” and instantly started reversing.
Jared: This is the first story I hear in the morning. He goes on to say Jensen and Clif told him that after the girl saw them they noticed she was veering across like 8 lanes of traffic and when they saw what she was doing they realized she was staring at her phone while trying to drive, freaking out over what just happened.
Jared touches Jensen as Jensen is turned away. Jensen: I know you’re smelling your fingers.
Back to the Jo and Lisa question, Jensen says: Lisa for domestic life, Jo for hunting life.
Which season was the most fun to film? Jensen: Other than the one that you met Genevieve in. Jared: I enjoy the one where I met my wife.
Jared starts trying to rap. Jensen joins in briefly with backup from the band lol.
Jensen: Favorite season…umm…tough one. Jared: You only have 11 to choose from. Jensen: I also liked the season in which I met Jared’s wife. He also liked season 9.
Jared’s phone suddenly starts playing music in his pocket: Jensen: Why is Rod Stewart playing on your phone?
Favorite superhero? Someone mentions Stephen Amell. Jensen: But he’s not a superhero! Jared jokes he’s too short. Jared doesn’t like special powers, just likes good people. Jensen read the script of Deadpool and has become a massive fan.
Fan brings up the voicemail on Sam’s phone that he thought was from Dean in s4. How would the characters react if they knew it was a faked voicemail? Jared talks about how the hardest thing for Sam to deal with is if his brother actually thought those things about him. Jared: They’ve been through a lot. It would have saved them a lot of heartache if they had known back then, but they would get through it.
Juggling between being a dad, husband, actor? Jared: My family and I traveled with Jensen’s family and him and a few friends over the New Year’s and at one point he looked at Jensen and was like, “Dude, we gotta get back to work so I can relax” lol. He’s so grateful for his wife, and he wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for her. He says anything that’s right with their kids is because of her. Jensen: Yeah, they (Gen and Danneel) certainly have the tougher job. Families reside in Austin, Texas while we film in Vancouver, CA, so there’s a lot of travel involved. Kids are starting to get to an age where they notice the absence/presence. Without Genevieve and Danneel it wouldn’t be possible.
What would Sam and Dean’s nickname for Crowley be since he calls them moose and squirrel? Jared and Jensen start whispering and laughing until they finally come up with crumpet.
Favorite place to take family on vacation? Jared: I would love to bring them back to Jacksonville. He talks about how his and Jensen’s family went to the beach together for Thanksgiving and says that Montana was awesome for Gen’s birthday. Jared: Our home base in Austin is very solid. Jensen: Because I know my wife, a beach.
Hypothetically speaking, if you had a spirit animal that could be any supernatural creature that played pranks on any other character besides your own, what would it be and why? Jared: My spirit animal would be brisket. Jensen: Jared, I’m pretty sure brisket is not an animal. But cow, that it comes from, is. I’m fairly certain brisket is just meat. Jared: Agree to disagree. Jared says his spirit animal would be a moose. Jensen: I would be a skunk. But like the Pepe Le Pew version. On the pranks part of the question: pranks would be pretty obvious, just “wait for Misha to open the door.”
Jared gets Jensen to do the French “Moi” joke lol.
Fan asks when they realized show had gotten big. Jensen tells a story about how he was at an airport and a guy waiting to board asked him, “Aren’t you the guy that used to be on Supernatural?” Jensen: “No, I’m the guy that’s still on Supernatural.” The guy said, “That’s right, man, I’m sorry I should know that. I’ve grown up watching.” Jensen: Great, not only are we big but we’re old.
Jared tells a story about how a few years ago Kripke and Jensen did an interview and got quoted in like Entertainment Weekly about how they were hoping to go at least five seasons, because at that point they would worry about being cancelled every year so they were hoping to go at least that long. They both got phone calls from the big bosses telling them to stop saying they want the show to be cancelled after five seasons. They realized then they had staying power.
What are internal struggles that the characters have shown that you wish they would touch on more in the show. For example, Dean’s alcoholism? Jensen: Wow, just because he likes to continuously be slightly bent all the time doesn’t mean…Yeah that really didn’t get touched on but we got away from that in recent years. It never really got dealt with and I don’t know why. We’ve seen them go through a ton and those experiences reveal a lot of different characteristics. Jensen says he was talking at his M&G that Dean has a hard time asking for help. He finds that quality of wanting to shoulder everything, of not asking for help, interesting and says he knows people in his personal life that are like that.
Jared: Jensen said something that we never really got into Dean’s alcoholism. It occurred to me that one really neat part about Supernatural is unlike other shows we’ve seen so many facets of these characters that they’ve embodied everything. Alcoholism, sociopathy, bizarre characteristics, but the overarching message is the same: Trying to help others, help each other. Jared thinks as opposed to focusing on Sam’s addiction to demon blood, etc, it’s focusing more on who they’re trying to be everyday.
Fan’s name is Cookie. Jensen: I had me some cookie earlier. Fan: Was it chocolate chip? Jensen: Uh..it was an oreo. Fan: Double Stuffed? Jared cheers, J2 wrap their arms around each other’s shoulders as they approach the fan to congratulate her wit lol. Cookie for the win!
Fan brings up how Jared doesn’t think he does comedy well on screen and tells him that he does awesome comedy, Jared says thanks. They then ask about the logistics of fight scenes. Jensen says that when it’s fight scenes with him and Jared it’s easier because they have worked so long together and work so well together, they and the stunt coordinator can coordinate something very quickly. But with new people it’s trickier. He mentions how they are working with a real-life boxer and wrestler right now, and since they know how to throw real punches and land those punches, it can be nerve-wracking.
Jared: I’ve recently viewed a fight scene that’s going to be airing sometime in the near future. It took a whole day to film, but lasts about 30 seconds on screen. Dialogue scenes take about three hours to film but last about 4 minutes, so it flips for a fight scene because of angles, stunt doubles, etc. If they had more time to film they would do more; sometimes they have to cut down the fight scenes for time.
Last question is about visual effects. Jensen: Effects have changed incredibly over the past few seasons. They used to shoot a bunch in front of green screen. Now, they don’t even need that. They can be on regular set/regular scene. Jared discusses how they have to really commit when they have to react to things that aren’t there, like pretending a monster is coming at them.
Jensen teases Jared for when they were filming and the bowl of blood dropped and he jumped back instead of catching it. Says that Jared looked at him and said: I always hoped I wouldn’t react like that.
Fangasm jared-and-jensen-at-jaxcon-supernatural-cons-kick-off-2016/
The Supernatural Creation con circuit kicked off 2016 with a first time visit to Jacksonville, which turned out to be an awesome con! In fact, quite a few students from UNF’s Supernatural course were in attendance, much to the incredulity of all the guests.
Jensen: There’s a COLLEGE COURSE about Supernatural??? Of course there is!
For now, a bit of Sunday, aka J2 Day. I was lucky enough to go to both Jared and Jensen’s meet and greets, which made for a very very fine Sunday indeed. These are just a few excerpts from my feeble memory, not a transcript, ..
Jared’s meet and greet started off with a question from the professor of that Supernatural class, who only got out the first part of her question before Jared excitedly interrupted.
Jared: I got it! I read the syllabus!
No surprise there. He had not only read the syllabus, but thoughtfully answered her question about craft versus storytelling. Jared said that he realizes that artistry can sometimes get in the way of craftsmanship, something he learned in part from Jensen. He also said that their craft is about seeing others, which comes with maturity.
Jared: I’m lucky, my craft mirrors life itself. You have to learn the way to tell a story that serves the story, not you.
He also talked about filming that last scene in Sacrifice that affected all of us so much.
Jared: I got really into it, became too focused inward. There’s an old saying – ‘Give an actor 3 months to work on a script, he’ll use 3 months. Give him 3 minutes, he’ll use 3 minutes.’
Me: where Sam ends up in the cage with Lucifer you conveyed so much emotion – so much terror, just PTSD level horror – as Sam stared at Lucifer, and that one tear escaped.
Another fan: The OPT!
Jared: [smiling] We still call it that on set, even if it was renamed the Single Man Tear.
Jared: When I read it [that scene], the hairs stood up on my face. Know what I mean? And when we filmed it, I remembered that feeling. It was an emotional feeling. I know what that’s like. I’ve been lied to and I’ve been betrayed. I’ve had the feeling of not knowing at all and then just being hit with the reality of it, like WHAT?? I guess I’ve gotten better at showing what I’m feeling on my face. I wasn’t sure it came through, it was shot really dark.
A fan also asked about whether or not Sam still has demon blood in him. Jared said he didn’t know, but confided “I hope he does,” since it could make for a pretty interesting story line.
Someone asked about the atmosphere on set, pointing out that every single guest star always ends up raving about how different it is from other sets, how friendly and welcoming, and they always give credit to the two leads for making that happen. Was it something that Jared and Jensen had discussed?
Jared: It’s organic, we never had a conversation about it. We liked who we had around. And if people were jerks, they started falling off. It’s subconscious. And we have each other’s backs.
He went on to say that filming a television show is a lot of stress, and that maybe sometimes a guest actor wasn’t a jerk but just having a crisis or being under all that stress, and that he wanted to be understanding of that.
Fan: Well, everyone who guests on SPN says all good things.
Jared: [deadpans] Oh, so the payments are working.
Joking aside, it seems fairly obvious why the atmosphere on the Supernatural set is so different from others – especially others in their 11th season. In fact, the next story Jared told is relevant. He said that he and Jensen both had separate conversations with Clif about the Powerball when it was so ridiculously high. And they both independently told him that if they won, they would still show up for work the next day. No hesitation. (Though Jared did tell Clif that he’d totally understand if they never laid eyes on him again!]
Jared: Ask Lynn! I just sent her a chapter for her new book.
Jared talked about how much he struggled with writing it, though.
Jared: It’s not like when you give an interview, when I can qualify things. If people don’t like what I’ve said, I can explain. But writing – it’s so final. It’s just out there. It’s scary.
Jensen: We were on vacation with our families and he was working away. I was like, what are you doing? And he said go away, I’m working on my chapter!
Me to Jared: I hope you believe me when I say your chapter is fabulous.
Jared: [looks skeptical]. But you know, it’s not what I do. I’m an actor, not a writer.
There was another question about Mark Sheppard’s hysterical little video of Jensen and Jared making fun of how long it takes Mark and Ruth to say their lines (which I have yet to see – someone please link me in the comments!) It was apparently filmed at a con. Jared said they constructed this huge long hallway for that walk through Purgatory, which left Mark and Ruth plenty of room to get their lines in.
[At this, Jared jumped up to show us, much to the joy of everyone in the room]
Jared: So I get to the end, and they weren’t done! And I was like, ‘say your lines, what’s going on here?’ Me and Bob Singer were on the floor laughing. I’d just stop at a certain point and say to the Steadicam operator, ‘they’re not gonna finish, we have to go again’. I was telling Ackles about it at the con and then…
So that’s how that happened. He also said that much of the hysterical stuff they did in the Mockumentary that Misha made was ad libbed.
ared said that when he was home, he told Gen to sleep in while he made the boys breakfast. Supernatural happened to be on the television, and it captured Tom’s attention as a scene with Ruby came on. A few minutes later, Gen got up and wandered into the room.
Tom: Mommy, you work with Daddy and Uncle Jensen too??
Gen: [glancing at the screen and seeing what was now a typically Supernatural moment] What the hell are you thinking??!
A little later, it was time for Jensen’s meet and greet. I was bursting to ask a question, which must have been obvious, since Jensen motioned for me to go ahead.
Me: I’m still confused about the whole Dean and Amara thing. Especially after the last episode we saw, where Dean spends most of the episode being so worried about Sam and makes him promise to call before he does anything about the Cage, and then he doesn’t answer his phone when Sam calls! Is he like in a trance or something???
Jensen said yes, it is sort of like he’s in a trance. He said we still don’t know exactly where it’s going or what’s exactly happening between them even in the episode they’re filming now (episode 16).
Jensen said that at first he thought that Dean was sort of enamored of Amara – and so he played it that way.
Me: That’s how it seemed.
Jensen: [laughing] Oh, well good, I succeeded then!
Then he thought no, this doesn’t seem right, so he met with Jeremy Carver.
Jensen: And then I understood it more like she’s Kryptonite.
Jensen: And Dean really doesn’t understand it, doesn’t know what’s happening. That’s why he’s been so secretive with Sam. In fact, in an upcoming episode… Have you seen the scene where.
Jensen: No real spoilers, but Dean does tell Sam that he might need to do something he doesn’t do very often – put Sam in the driver’s seat, because he doesn’t know if he’ll be able to perform. It’s like, I might have to sit this one out on the bench, though it goes against everything he wants to do. That’s why he’s been so secretive with Sam, because he doesn’t know how to talk about it. It’s a mystery for a while longer.
As big and sinister as the Darkness story line is, Jensen said he gets a chance to do some physical comedy again in an upcoming episode, which he enjoys. He likes these mid season one offs, which is what they’re filming now.
A fan complimented him on something Dean says in Spanish in one episode.
Jensen: [not taking the compliment] No, I don’t speak Spanish….
He did say that he has an ear though; if he hears it, he can mimic it. Camera operator Jose Manzano helps him with pronunciation.
Jensen: I say, “Jose, Andale!”
Someone asked about bringing some of the fandom’s beloved guest characters back, which Jensen enjoys too. He said he’s glad that Robbie Thompson likes to write those kind of episodes, to bring back characters we’ve lost.
Jensen: And it’s not easy. Because they’re dead.
Jensen: Bringing those characters back adds a quality and a layer and depth to an already great show. It feels like having an old friend come to dinner.
Jensen also talked more about the family dynamic that is Supernatural, and how important to him the camaraderie and teamwork on set is, especially with a crew who has been with them for 11 years. For example, one of the camera assistants has a daughter who was born in Season 1, so now she’s 10 and she runs in and comes up and hugs him when she visits the set. The other day Jared had his boys on set, Jensen teasing and carrying them around. It really is a family!
A fan asked him if he watches the episodes, and he says he’s seen every one. He did a hysterical imitation of himself trying to live tweet an episode, which had us all laughing.
Jensen: It’s hard! I can’t keep up, I’m like, oh no I have to change that ‘to’ to ‘too’, and oh no, now something else is happening, ahhh!
Someone also asked about his favorite episodes, and he talked about ‘Death’s Door’ as one of the best.
Jensen: [wryly] Bob Singer directed an episode about when Bobby Singer dies. Kind of ironic.
He also really liked the Season 9 finale, when Dean opens his eyes and is revealed to be a demon.
Jensen: Even though you guys were all like ‘oh I saw that coming’. But I didn’t! When I read it, I was like ‘oh no they didn’t!’
A fan also asked about the Purgatory story and Dean’s relationship with Benny. Jensen said that Dean and Benny didn’t have a Sam and Dean kind of relationship, like brothers in arms sort of relationship exactly, but more like Cas and Dean. They may not always be together, but they have each other’s backs.
Somehow this led to a tangent about Leonardo DiCaprio, who Jensen agrees is an excellent actor.
Jensen: But I just can’t take him seriously as a leading man – he looks like a boy!
The other day the hair and makeup person on set showed him a photo of Leo in ‘The Revenant’ covered in mud and blood, to disprove Jensen’s contention.
Jensen: Well of course he looks manly there, he’s covered in mud and blood! I looked manly in Purgatory covered in mud and blood! In fact, get me back there!
