Jensen Ackles Teases Supernatural Reunion in The Boys; Talks Action-Packed Countdown 

JF: You’re a stud.  Welcome to the show.  Thank you for being here.  I actually was very lucky to meet your beautiful daughter backstage, JJ.

JA: Isn’t she the best? 

JF: She’s so cute. How old is she?

JA: 12.

JF: Does she, is she starting to understand what dad does for a living or no?

JA: She does.  Uh, but it’s, I think it’s recent.  I mean, she always knew that I went off and I did things that she wasn’t allowed to watch.  And… 

JF:  Good dad.  Good dad.

JA: Yeah.  Not age appropriate, we like to say.  Uh, but, uh, but now she, uh, I think she’s creeped into that, uh, to that age to where I think she might be able to watch Countdown.  I might have to, you know, watch it with her.  But she’s excited about it.  Um, and… 

JF:  I can’t wait to talk about Countdown.  It’s fantastic, it’s so rad. But, uh, before that I wanted to talk to you about something and that is your modelling career.  

JA: Oh

JF:  Uh, this is something…  I took a deep dive into this and really did my research and I found a photo shoot…  

JA: Jimmy, I don’t have a modelling career.

JF: Well, I’m about to show you.  You did.  I’m talking about a J.C. Penney

catalogue around…  in the 90s, somehow.  Is this guy ringing a bell, Jensen?

JF: Look at, look at this one.  This is my favourite one.  You’re like, would you say to me, old man?  

JA: Oh, there’s more?  I wore that last weekend.

JF: Next time you come on, we should both wear these. 

JA: Uh…  Don’t tempt me.

JF: Look at this guy.  Hey!  Hey!

JA: That’s a total model move.  You just might have been right around the time that, uh, uh, Joey was going, how you doing?  And I think that’s what that was.

JF: You were doing the same thing?  I think you were.

JA: That was my how you doing pose.

JF: Uh, you just finished filming the fifth and final season of The Boys.  Man, I love that show.  That is unbelievable.  At its next level, and, uh, we’ve heard that a bit of it, of this season, we’ll maybe have a little bit of a supernatural reunion?  

JA: Yes.  Um…

JF: Jared Padalecki?  

JA: So, Eric Kripke, who created Supernatural, he’s also the writer, showrunner of The Boys.  So he, you know, when he likes to work with somebody, he likes to continue working with them, and I was, I was the benefactor of that, obviously, but then he thought, what a great idea.  Let’s just bring the cast back together, splash the ratings a little bit, not that it needs it, um…  

JF: But tune in.  It could happen to any episode, we’re not sure. 

JA: And it was funny, because it was, it was a little, like, concern that, you know, we’re gonna get Jared and Misha and Jensen together, and it’s gonna be a little wacky, because 15 years together, we got a little off.

JF: History, yeah.

JA: There’s a lot, there’s a lot of history, but it was also a house that we built, and we were able to destroy it the way we wanted to.  And so I had to kind of remind them, I was like, hey guys, this isn’t our house, okay?  You gotta behave….  Jared, you’ve gotta flush the toilet.

JF: Gotta flush the tea, yeah.

JA: Um, no, but it was, it was a really good time, I can’t wait, uh, to be

able to say more, but

JF: But you still have, like, is it SupernaturalCon?

JA: Yeah, well, we do, like, these Comic-Cons, we do, like, these fan

conventions, these fan appearances, and we… i

JF: They’re getting bigger and bigger.  

JA: They are.  And, and I thought that they would fizzle out, like, once the show, the show’s been off for five years.  And they’re still growing, and we’re still getting asked to come to these different cities.

JF: Is it streaming?  Is that why everyone’s watching ..

JA: Netflix, I think it’s done really, really well on Netflix.  A lot of people during the pandemic, I think, found it, and they’ve binged all 15 seasons, and now they’re coming to these events, and they’re wanting to ask us questions.  And it’s, it’s really unique, because, you know, for, for somebody who, who was behind the camera doing film, doing television, we don’t have an audience.

We have a camera that doesn’t, that gives us absolutely no emotional response.  You know, it’s not like sitting here, you, you know, you know when a joke lands, you know when it doesn’t.

JF: Trust me. 

JA: Right.

JF: They almost forgot about it, and now you had to bring it up again.  

JA: Listen, you brought up my old modelling photos.

JF: All right.  Deal’s a deal.  Deal’s a deal.

JA: Uh, but it, it, it really, it’s interesting, because it gives us a chance.  Those are just stuck on set, and we’re doing day after day, and maybe you might get a giggle from a, a boom operator, and that’s about it.  But now, now we get to go, and we get to see these crowds of people who really enjoy what we do.  And it just, it’s, it’s energising, as I’m sure you can imagine.  

JF: It’s gotta feel great.

JA: It’s awesome.  Uh, any, any idea for maybe a Supernatural reboot?  I mean,

look, it’s, it’s always hanging out there.  I think there’s a reason we did it

for 15 years.  We enjoyed it.  We enjoyed each other.  We enjoyed the story,

the characters.  Um, it was hard to hang it up, um, but I don’t know that we

ever hang it up in Supernatural, so.  Yeah.  So we’ll see.

JF: Let’s talk about your new series.  Let’s talk about Countdown.  I love this.

This is a thriller with all sorts of action.  How do we set this up?

JA: It’s a, it’s a bit of a throw(back).  So, Derek Haas, who created the

show, was a big, big fan of like the 80s action movies and, and then, you

know, the 80s, 90s, you know, you’re talking about your Die Hards and your Lethal Weapons and talking about the A-team and so he wanted to kind of like take a little bit of that inspiration and make something, uh, today.  And, and so he, he wrote this action-packed thrill ride, with humour, with heart.  Um, and it’s all packed into this, you know, lively package.  And I was really excited because, you know, as a child of, growing up in the 80s and 90s, like those were like the, the Bruce Willis’s and the Kurt Russell’s.

JF: You say that one line.  I mean, come on.  Yeah. You got those lines.

JA: You line them up.  And so, uh, to get to…  

JF: By the way, you’re great at the action scenes.  Are you like used to it now after all these years? 

JA:  I’m, I’m sore, Jimmy.  I’m sore.

No.  Don’t tell, don’t let, don’t let us believe that.

JA: No.  Uh, I, I love it.  I mean, I, I, sometimes I joke, I’m like, give me a day where I have to like get run over by a car, thrown through a wall over a day where I have to cry.  That’s uh…  That’s the hard part. 

JF: Do you have to, have to re-record and do ADR like on lines of like a fight scene where like, uh, we didn’t get enough grunts out of you, Jensen.  Do you mind getting, pretending you get hit in the face in this microphone?

JA: Yeah.  So, so, I mean, when I started doing that, you know, it’s called

ADR or looping.  Uh, I think Charlize just alluded to that.

So when you do this additional recording and you have to kind of match it to the, to the, you know, to the action on camera, I thought, okay, well I need to like do the punches and do the moves in order to, to recreate the sounds.  

JF: You’re not on camera at this point.  

JA: I’m not on camera.  So I quickly realised why am I sweating in a recording studio?  Cause I’m doing all this, and I quickly, early figured out that I did not need to do that and I could literally sit down and just go, oh, yeah, oh, I love, yeah, that’s it.  That’s right there.  That’s a solar plexus.  Yeah.
